Smoke, Draw & Airflow
Smoke spilling into the room, fires that won't die down, and flames that keep choking out are the three most common faults we're called to. Start with the causes below before you reach for the phone.
The Short Answer
Your chimney lacks natural "draw" (upward pull), typically caused by an air pressure battle, a heavy plug of cold air, poor room ventilation, or an overdue sweep.

- Use the "top-down" lighting method: Traditional bottom-up lighting smothers the fuel and creates heavy, sluggish smoke. Instead, place larger, dry logs flat at the bottom, stack kindling criss-cross on top, and set your firelighter at the very summit. The goal is creating immediate, intense heat at the top of the stove to warm the exit route fast.
- Warm the flue: If the chimney is stone-cold, dense air sinks downward into your room. Blast hot air directly up toward the baffle with a heat gun for 60–90 seconds before lighting, or light a single firelighter directly inside to break the cold air plug.
- Ventilation and the 5 kW rule: Modern homes with tight insulation can starve a fire. Crack a window slightly to see if the smoke immediately clears up the flue. Remember that under UK Building Regulations, any stove rated over 5 kW legally requires a dedicated, permanently open external air vent that must never be covered or obstructed.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
If warming the flue and opening a window does not solve the issue, your chimney may simply be long overdue for a sweep. Heavy soot accumulation, tar buildup, or a physical obstruction like a bird's nest or cobwebs will choke the exhaust pathway.
The Short Answer
Air is sneaking into the firebox from an unregulated source, causing the fire to over-fire and burn through fuel uncontrollably.
DIY Checks & Safe Actions
- Test the door rope seals: Carry out the "paper test." Trap a strip of standard paper in the closed stove door and pull. If the paper pulls out easily without tearing, the rope has compressed or hardened and needs changing. (If you do not want to tackle the glue and rope yourself, replacing seals is a routine service we carry out).
- Check the door handle and latch: The handle should pull the door tightly against the stove body. If the catch has worked loose or worn down over time, air will pull straight around the door perimeter.
- Inspect the air sliders: Look closely at the primary and secondary controls. Make sure the sliding plates are not jammed open with stray ash, warped from previous overheating, or disconnected internally from their lever.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
If the seals and vents look sound, the chimney may be pulling with excessive vacuum, or internal castings could be cracked. During a standard sweep, we carry out comprehensive visual checks and an official smoke test to verify that air flows, draws, and evacuates correctly.
The Short Answer
The fire isn't sustaining enough core temperature, almost always down to high fuel moisture, a shifted baffle plate, or lighting technique.

- Check your lighting technique: Fires fail when people try to rush the process without building enough heat. Use plenty of kindling to establish a hot bed of embers before adding main fuel. Use softwood (pine, cedar) to start—it catches rapidly and dumps rapid heat into the stove body. Once that base is established, switch to dense hardwood (oak, ash, birch) to maintain a steady, long-lasting burn.
- Test your fuel moisture: Always split a log and test the freshly exposed inner face with a digital moisture meter. Wood must register 20% moisture or lower. Fuel above 25% wastes its energy boiling off internal water, producing steam and hissing until the fire suffocates.
- Check if the throat plate (baffle) has moved: You don't need to dismantle your stove, but shine a torch up inside to look at the metal or vermiculite plate resting across the top of the firebox. If it has slipped out of its brackets or tilted sideways, it will choke off the internal flue passageway.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
If your technique is solid, your wood is dry, and the baffle sits correctly, the chimney liner itself is likely restricted with soot and needs clearing.
Safety, Leaks & Corrosion
Carbon monoxide alarms, rust, and tar leaks are the faults we treat most seriously. Never ignore a CO alarm or black liquid running down a flue pipe.
The Short Answer
Your alarm is signaling either an active, life-threatening gas leak (continuous alarm) or an internal sensor/battery fault (intermittent chirp).

- Identify the beep pattern immediately: A continuous, piercing alarm means carbon monoxide is accumulating in the room. Open all windows immediately, leave the house into fresh air, and call emergency services if anyone experiences headaches, dizziness, or nausea. Do not relight the appliance.
- Check for a low battery or expired unit: A single, isolated chirp every 30 to 60 seconds signals an internal fault, flat battery, or reached end-of-life. Check the replacement date stamped on the back or side—most alarms only have a 5- to 7-year working life.
- Verify alarm placement: Building Regulations Approved Document J states CO alarms must be fitted between 1 and 3 metres from the stove, positioned high on a wall or on the ceiling. Fitting the alarm too close to the door opening can cause nuisance chirps from momentary smoke puffs when refuelling.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
If the alarm triggered while the stove was actively lit and the unit is well within its expiry date, do not use the stove. Book a sweep to conduct a thorough flue check, clear any blockages, and carry out a formal smoke clearance test.
The Short Answer
Moisture is reacting with corrosive soot deposits, driven by humid summer air, wet wood, roofline leaks, or poor flue installation.
DIY Checks & Safe Actions
- Clear out all ash at the end of winter: Ash contains hygroscopic salts that pull moisture directly out of the atmosphere. Leaving ash sitting in the firebox through humid spring and summer months creates an acidic, damp paste that aggressively eats through steel and cast iron.
- Maintain off-season airflow: Never leave the stove tightly sealed over the summer. Leave the air controls cracked slightly open (or the stove door a fraction ajar) to keep ambient air moving and prevent stagnant, damp air pockets.
- Clean light surface rust: Use fine wire wool or a soft wire brush to scrub away orange surface rust on the outer casing, then restore the finish using dedicated heat-resistant stove paint or black graphite polish.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
Rust pooling on top of the stove or around the flue collar often means water is entering the system. A sweep can inspect the chimney system to diagnose the source. (Twin-wall systems should incorporate an external moisture trap at the bottom of the external twin wall flue pipe. Masonry stacks may need a roofer to repoint brickwork).
The Short Answer
Clear liquid indicates external rainwater entry, while foul-smelling, sticky black liquid is condensed creosote (tar) caused by cool flue gases and wet fuel.

- Check fuel moisture: Sticky black liquid running down the joints means volatile flue gases are dropping below their dew point inside the pipe. This is almost always caused by burning wood above 20% moisture or excessively "slumbering" the fire overnight.
- Monitor your burn temperature: Fit a magnetic stove thermometer to your single-wall pipe. Keep the running temperature between 120°C and 250°C. If you burn consistently below this range, internal steam and unburnt hydrocarbons condense on the cold liner walls and run back down into the room.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
If rain is washing down the pipe, your chimney cowl or pot seal may have failed. If black tar is running down the joints, you have a severe chimney fire hazard. The chimney liner requires professional power sweeping and potentially a CCTV camera survey to inspect the liner walls and confirm whether the glazed tar has been successfully removed, as baked-on tar adheres aggressively to the flue.
Damaged Components & Internal Wear
Firebricks, baffle plates and stove glass take the brunt of every burn. Here's what's normal wear, what's replaceable, and what needs a professional eye.
The Short Answer
Fine hairline cracks are safe to monitor, but you should stop using the stove if bricks are crumbling, displaced, or exposing the outer metal casing.

- Understanding firebricks: Firebricks are a sacrificial component of your stove. They are specifically designed to absorb extreme thermal stress, retain heat inside the firebox for efficient burning, and protect the outer casing from direct flame damage.
- Hairline cracks vs. missing chunks: Hairline cracks are a normal result of heat expansion. As long as the brick remains solidly seated, it can safely be monitored. If pieces have broken away and bare metal casing is exposed, stop using the appliance. Direct exposure will warp, crack, or permanently burn out the stove body.
- Official replacement: Because firebricks are sacrificial parts, they are readily available and can be ordered directly from the stove manufacturer or an approved supplier as complete, exact-fit replacement sets.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
A sweep inspects the internal condition of your firebricks during an annual service and can source and fit official manufacturer replacements to ensure your firebox remains safely insulated.
The Short Answer
Prolonged overheating (over-firing), burning unauthorized high-heat fuels (such as petroleum-based solid fuels), or normal wear and tear over years of heating cycles.
DIY Checks & Safe Actions
- Inspect visually (do not remove): When the stove is completely cold, shine a torch inside to inspect the plate sitting across the roof of the firebox. You can easily check it for sagging, thinning, or cracking, but we do not advise trying to wrestle or remove the baffle plate yourself.
- Expansion and dropping: As metal heats and cools, it expands and contracts. Over time, or following intense overheating, a plate can shift off its rear support lugs and drop down on one side.
- Consider replacing a distorted plate: A damaged or bowed baffle drastically hurts the performance and efficiency of your stove, letting valuable heat escape straight up the flue. It also becomes structurally unstable and risks collapsing. In many stove models, the throat plate holds the rear and side firebricks upright, meaning a compromised baffle can cause surrounding bricks to fall inward.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
A chimney sweep has the practical knowledge and experience across hundreds of stove models to safely handle and free stubborn baffles without damaging the stove body. They can assess the extent of internal wear and advise on ordering the correct replacement components for your specific model.
The Short Answer
The fire is running too cold, fuel is resting directly against the glass, the wood has high moisture, or the airwash airflow is shut down.

- Keep the airwash open: Modern stoves rely on an "airwash" channel that directs a steady curtain of pre-heated air down the inner face of the glass to keep deposits from settling. We always recommend keeping the airwash control open to some degree throughout the burn; shutting it down entirely is the fastest way to turn the glass jet-black.
- Keep logs back from the door: Ensure logs are placed well clear of the door. If a log rests against the ceramic glass, it creates a localized cold spot where unburnt hydrocarbons instantly condense into heavy black soot.
- The ash-cleaning trick: Never use abrasive scouring pads, razor blades, or harsh chemical cleaners. Instead, take a damp piece of kitchen towel, dip it directly into cold, fine wood ash from the hearth, and gently rub the glass. The fine ash acts as a gentle, natural abrasive that lifts baked-on soot effortlessly. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
If your wood is dry (strictly under 20% moisture) and the airwash is open, but the glass still blacks out immediately, your chimney may be suffering from sluggish draw. As part of a standard service and smoke test, a sweep will inspect the airwash channels, verify proper airflow through the stove, and confirm the flue is venting cleanly.
Regulations, Condemnations & Safety Notices
Condemnation notices, clearance distances and cowl rules — what they mean for your appliance and your legal obligations as the owner.
The Short Answer
The chimney sweep has identified a critical defect or hazard where operating the appliance poses an immediate danger to life or property.
What You Need to Know
- Duty of care: A professional chimney sweep has a clear duty of care to inform you directly about serious defects and safety issues with your appliance or flue. If an installation presents a clear danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, chimney fire, or structural ignition, the sweep cannot sign it off as safe to use.
- What triggers this status: This is not for minor cosmetic points. It is reserved for extreme concerns where there is serious risk to the building or occupants. Typical triggers include severely cracked or breached flue pipes, dangerous accumulations of glazed tar that cannot be safely swept, compromised flues leaking smoke into bedrooms or lofts, or hazardous clearances to combustible building structures.
- Next steps and putting it right: When this status is recorded, your sweep will detail exactly why the system is unsafe and advise on the next steps—whether that involves replacing broken components, carrying out remedial work, or arranging further specialist investigation.
When to light the stove
Do not use the stove under any circumstances until the repairs have been properly completed and the system has been assessed as safe.
The Short Answer
Radiant heat breaks down timber and plasterboard over time through a process called "pyrolysis," drying the material until it can ignite without needing direct flame contact.
What You Need to Know
- The danger of pyrolysis: People often assume wood only catches fire when touched by naked flame. In reality, continuous exposure to heat dries out timber over months and years, chemically degrading it into combustible charcoal. Over time, that floating oak beam can catch fire during an ordinary evening burn.
- Building Regulations & clearances: Under UK Building Regulations Approved Document J, single-wall connecting flue pipes are often required to be kept at a distance of three times the outer diameter of the pipe away from combustible surfaces (unless certified shielding is used). In addition, every stove model has distinct, lab-tested clearance distances for its rear, sides, and hearth specified by the manufacturer.
- Common problem areas: Solid oak floating mantels installed directly above the flue outlet, and standard paper-faced plasterboard inside the fireplace recess (standard plasterboard is combustible and must not be used in an open chamber).
- Remedial options: Replace wooden mantels with realistic, non-combustible cast-stone replica beams, fit certified air-gapped heat shielding, or reline the recess with non-combustible fire-rated boards.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
A sweep will check your clearances against the appliance data plate and advise whether your installation is compliant, or what heat-deflection steps are required.
The Short Answer
Yes. A solid fuel cowl stops nesting birds, reduces rain entry, and manages draught, but it must be structurally secure and purpose-built for wood and multi-fuel appliances.
What You Need to Know
- The Jackdaw risk: Jackdaws can pack a chimney pot with twigs, soil, and moss in 48 hours, blocking flue gas exit and sending carbon monoxide back into your living space. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, active wild bird nests are legally protected; if birds nest in your chimney during spring, the nest cannot legally be cleared until the chicks have fledged.
- Secure fitting is essential: Any cowl fitted to a chimney pot must be structurally sound and securely clamped or strapped. It should never be loose enough to be dislodged or knocked off by chimney brushes during a routine sweep.
- No wire stuffing: Stuffing loose chicken wire or crumpled mesh down into the top of a chimney pot is unacceptable. It gathers falling soot, quickly clogs solid, and becomes a prime chimney fire ignition point.
- The 1-inch mesh rule: Cowls designed for solid fuel stoves must use an open stainless-steel mesh—typically 1 inch (25mm x 25mm) hole sizing. This allows large soot particles and heavy wood smoke to exit freely without snagging. Never fit a cowl intended for gas appliances onto a wood stove; gas terminals have tightly woven mesh that will clog with soot in weeks.
When to Call a Professional Sweep
A sweep can check that your existing cowl is secure, clear out any nesting debris, or supply and fit the correct solid-fuel birdguard or anti-downdraught terminal.
